Broadcasts Interrupted by Equipment Failure: The Day the Music Died

KRFY has gone silent due to equipment failure early Monday morning (July 15) at our Ponderay transmission site.

The FM signal amplifier that is currently rented from a third party seems to have ceased to operate. This is the last piece of equipment in the signal chain before it leaves the antenna on its way through the chain of transmission towers to reach our community. The amplifier, which normally boosts the signal of what we usually hear, is now missing; thus, listeners can only hear it faintly behind overwhelming static. It is the FM exciter that generates the actual FM transmission from our audio signal. Some listeners can pick up the signal in their cars, but currently the signal is far too weak to penetrate buildings more than a few hundred feet away from our transmission source.

Our volunteer staff and technicians are in contact with our third-party provider to see if a replacement amplifier is available, and the KRFY board will determine if purchasing KRFY’s own equipment is a possibility. At this point we have no answer as to when we can resume our regular broadcast to the public.

Our listeners can still hear our broadcasts via a computer by linking directly at:

https://tunein.com/radio/Sandpoint-Community-Radio-885-s133262/

or if you prefer, logging in at www.tunein.com and typing the call letters “KRFY” into the search bar at the top of the page.

The volunteers at KRFY regret this turn of events that will disrupt our regular broadcast to our listening audience. We are attempting to resolve the technical problems that lead to this silence and express our commitment to returning to the air as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this disruption of our normally reliable transmission..

A note on KRFY funding

How has defunding and closure of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting affected KRFY? Our station is funded solely by listeners, supporters and underwriters and has never received funding from the CPB. But some syndicated shows KRFY airs will be affected. The National Federation of Community Broadcasters has prepared a statement on impacts of the CPB closure. Click to read it.
