Barry Barush: Too Soon Gone

Barry Barush, KRFY Board member and valued member of the north Idaho community, passed away on Friday, January 11. Barry was a hard worker, and his presence will be dearly missed. He believed in the mission of community-supported radio for north Idaho and spent many hours volunteering at the radio station, not only as a Board member, but also as chair of the Events Committee.

Levon Helm, member of the Band, sings “Too Soon Gone,” a song in play rotation at KRFY. The lyrics include: “Time sweeps me forward, as memory is caught / Too soon gone, too soon gone.” Barry is too soon gone, but his legacy of volunteerism, dedication, and commitment will be remembered for a long time. We are all better people for having known Barry. .

Treasure Chest Features Elvis — Viva Las Vegas!

Treasure Chest for January 13, 2013.  Join KRFY as we celebrate the birthday of the King, Elvis Aaron Presley. ( January 8, 1935 )

Much of Elvis’ early success stemmed from his electrifying live performances on stages around the world. That all changed with the movie deals, and the filming and recording schedules that left no time for concerts. Eventually, he grew unhappy with the movies, and returned to the stage in a big way – the legendary 1968 Comeback TV Special. As only Elvis can do, he then followed that up with something even bigger — Las Vegas. His string of sold out shows at the International and Hilton Hotels revolutionized the concert business at Vegas casinos, leading to the spectacles that are common today. These events were both large and intimate, and allowed Elvis to explore a unique, emotional repertoire of songs from many genres. Unfortunately, this creative moment was offset by his demons that were certainly not helped by Vegas’ 24-hour casino culture. In addition to those also interviewed for The Early Years, Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and Presley’s backup singer, Cissy Houston, also add insightful comments about Elvis’ Las Vegas years..

A note on KRFY funding

How has defunding and closure of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting affected KRFY? Our station is funded solely by listeners, supporters and underwriters and has never received funding from the CPB. But some syndicated shows KRFY airs will be affected. The National Federation of Community Broadcasters has prepared a statement on impacts of the CPB closure. Click to read it.
