Goodbye, Al Jazeera AM — Hello, Flashpoint Daily Newsmagazine!

Unfortunately, in August (no specific date given), Al Jazeera will cease doing its radio program. Al Jazeera has been a gem in KRFY’s program schedule for a number of years. We are very sorry to see this quality broadcast depart as it brought us news of the world never covered in “main-stream” news organizations.

Fortunately, we will be airing another news and public affairs program — Flashpoint Daily Newsmagazine — beginning on Monday, August 5. Flashpoint Daily Newsmagazine will air at 8:00 a.m. weekdays, the same time when Al Jazeera could have been heard previously. So, tune in and let us know if you like KRFY’s latest news and public affairs program. Thanks for your understanding, for tuning in, and supporting KRFY..

Monday, July 29 on KRFY

9:00 a.m.: Steve Holt, executive director of the Eureka Institute, and Brietta Leader, teacher of “Soul Motion Inspired Conscious Dance,” were in the studio to talk about the Third Annual Northwest YogaFest to be held on August 2 – 4, 2013, at the Eureka Center near Gamblin Lake.

Jessica Martin, Community Cancer Services (CCS) (left), Jim Healey, KRFY (center), Mandy Evans, representative of Leadership Sandpoint (right).

10:00 a.m.: Mandy Evans, representative of Leadership Sandpoint, and Jessica Martin, Community Cancer Services (CCS), came by the studio to talk to Jim Healey about the “Got Gas?” fundraising drive. CCS is a community-funded resource center providing information and supportive services to clients and their families experiencing cancer in Bonner and Boundary Counties. The local hospital in Sandpoint is a wonderful resource for cancer patients, but due to federal regulations it cannot provide radiation therapy in Sandpoint. This means that hundreds of patients leave the area to drive daily to Spokane to receive their treatment. The cost of this can create an enormous hardship on the patients and their families. In 2011, CCS gave out over 2,100 $15 gas cards to patients. This August CCS is holding a “Got Gas?” fundraising drive..

KRFY now Back On the Air after Short Silence

As of Wednesday, July 17, KRFY resolved the technical issue of a mechanical failure to the point where we are once again broadcasting over the air waves. The problem occurred with an amplifier at the leased transmitter station in Ponderay. We still have some equipment concerns to address, but our community radio is once again being heard in the Bonner County vicinity.

All of the volunteers at KRFY appreciate the patience and concern that our listeners expressed during our brief, 3-day silence. We are determined to keep this vital resource operating, especially when we see this recent expression of loss from our listening public. Thank you for listening and allowing us to inform and entertain all of you..

Broadcasts Interrupted by Equipment Failure: The Day the Music Died

KRFY has gone silent due to equipment failure early Monday morning (July 15) at our Ponderay transmission site.

The FM signal amplifier that is currently rented from a third party seems to have ceased to operate. This is the last piece of equipment in the signal chain before it leaves the antenna on its way through the chain of transmission towers to reach our community. The amplifier, which normally boosts the signal of what we usually hear, is now missing; thus, listeners can only hear it faintly behind overwhelming static. It is the FM exciter that generates the actual FM transmission from our audio signal. Some listeners can pick up the signal in their cars, but currently the signal is far too weak to penetrate buildings more than a few hundred feet away from our transmission source.

Our volunteer staff and technicians are in contact with our third-party provider to see if a replacement amplifier is available, and the KRFY board will determine if purchasing KRFY’s own equipment is a possibility. At this point we have no answer as to when we can resume our regular broadcast to the public.

Our listeners can still hear our broadcasts via a computer by linking directly at:

http://tunein.com/radio/Sandpoint-Community-Radio-885-s133262/

or if you prefer, logging in at www.tunein.com and typing the call letters “KRFY” into the search bar at the top of the page.

The volunteers at KRFY regret this turn of events that will disrupt our regular broadcast to our listening audience. We are attempting to resolve the technical problems that lead to this silence and express our commitment to returning to the air as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this disruption of our normally reliable transmission..
