The Stone Age Presents: A Tribute To Frank Zappa

This Sunday March 24, 2013 on KRFY’s Treasure Chest at 6:00 pm

The Stone Age* Presents: A Tribute to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

This show is dedicated to the loving memory of Barry Barush—  a Zappa fan. The music one listens to is part of how we define a person. How we expand our friendships and how we learn from each other. No one style of music can dictate who we are or why we do what we do in this world. As each of us share our love of music with each other, we open ourselves to knowing more about our friends our families and our community. When you dig into a friends music collection, you sometimes find out something you may never have known before about them. Listen, smile, grow.

This one hour show explores the music and history of the early days, 1966-1970. Subcultural information is provided, however, audiences will notice that this program focuses upon music and enjoyment, and not on hysteria, overweening praise or name dropping. Included are selections from ‘Freak Out’, ‘Absolutely Free’, ‘We’re Only In It For The Money’, ‘Lumpy Gravy’, ‘Uncle Meat’, ‘Weasels Ripped My Flesh’ and ‘Burnt Weenie Sandwich.’ The albums that featured, for the most part, the original musicians (but, with the addition of some others, later) put together to form The Mothers in 1964 in a recording studio in Cucamonga, California! (Hotcha!)

*The Stone Age, a series of programs of the “Electric Sound” that defined the 60’s and 70’s. The Electric Music that became the symbol of worldwide cultural change, the harbinger of a new time, a new world.

Zydeco Nation, A Black History Month Special

Tune in to Sunday evening’s Treasure Chest for some Creole Gumbo, Cajun-style!

AARP’s Prime Time Radio Black History Month Special documentary traces how the Louisiana Creole music known as zydeco found a new home 2,000 miles from its birthplace. Independent producers Richard Ziglar and Barry Yeoman interviewed the people who migrated from Louisiana to California starting in World War II to escape the racial discrimination prevalent in the South and find jobs in the shipping and defense industries. Once in California, they worked hard to keep their culture alive, especially their musical traditions.
The musicians and dancers who underwent this migration tell their stories of rebuilding their lives and their community. And they talk about how younger musicians are transmitting zydeco to the next generation-in the hopes that Creole traditions will continue to thrive in California.
We hope you enjoy AARP’s Prime Time Radio Black History Month Special: Zydeco Nation, this week on Prime Time Radio.
